Success Story

Dana Al-Ghanim

“Dana Al-Ghanim started Initial Job Search at Goodwill Industries in October 2010. She was very interested in obtaining a job as a make-up artist but had difficulty finding a job in that field because she did not have formal education in cosmetology. As a creative and unique individual, Dana was searching for a fun profession in which her talents and artistic ability could be applied. In the Initial Job Search program, Dana learned job-searching techniques including using online resources, resume building and interviewing skills. With the help of her Employment Services Specialist, Dana created tailored cover letters and resumes for specific positions and companies.

Dana enthusiastically took advantage of the resources offered in the Initial Job Search program. She “pounded the pavement,” contacting retail businesses conducting seasonal hiring, and ensured that her face and name would stand out amongst the crowd of other applicants. Dana made great connections with companies by going to retail locations equipped with multiple copies of cover letters and resumes tailored either for a position as a sales associate or as a make-up artist. Dana’s cover letter and resume describes her as an ideal employee who is fashion forward, style conscious and has developed an eye for color, décor and style. Dana received multiple offers of employment and ultimately started working in November at Forever 21 as a seasonal visual merchandiser. She aided in the store’s relocation in the Santa Rosa Plaza and after the holiday season was promoted to a full time, permanent employee. Dana’s story is encouraging on many levels. It demonstrates the possibilities of permanent employment from temporary work and the success that comes from being positive and active in job search by making connections, meeting employers in person and being able to sell yourself."
